Welcome to this lively introduction to Peter Wright`s diverse, creative and ofttimes humanitarian activities. Here, you can get a flavour for what motivates him so much in his charitable endeavours, writing, keeping fit and active, and sharing family history too: a hint to his septuagenarian direction of travel.
With his mantra of `busy is best`, there's always something happening for this man who says he is definitely a participant and not a passenger in life`s journey. This website sends a strong signal that the action must continue. On turning 75 in 2022, Peter Wright set out a five-year action plan to point the way ahead. Although rather tantalisingly, he's never committed it to paper, he confidently assures that thus far, he's more or less on target with it.
Much to his surprise, writing books has become an ever-present focus for Peter. Having left school at the age of fourteen, he tells us that he didn’t think he`d be well placed to become a published author. But circumstances intervened and following a very long solo off-trail walk in 2005, up and over some very wild terrain, he felt that there was an interesting story to be told, so one book led to another.
For reasons that are now somewhat obscured with the passage of time, charities seem to have been a big part of what Peter does, to make things happen. Too many to list here, but there are currently three that play a big part in his life; charities that make a real difference for many people, especially those that will benefit most from what each organisation delivers – with a purpose.
If long distance heavy-pack hiking is no longer possible, then bike-camping is surely the next best strenuous and deeply fulfilling activity to be involved in. So, Peter has been gradually pushing out the boundaries of this over the past fifteen or so years. Usually combining his efforts with a charity fundraising appeal. He's been exploring a multitude of self-planned solo routes that have spanned the length and breadth of Scotland. “I'm not done yet”, he assures us.
The more that Peter delved into his family history, so he began to discover intriguing snippets about some of the characters in his ancestry; the search for what he provocatively calls `genetic disposition` perhaps? Then it all had to be strung together in a more cohesive narrative, and above all organised. With the professional help of Alex Wood, it was all refined with a bit of precision, and with the support of Cousin Richard Stursberg loaded into Family Treemaker. The maternal family tree is certainly a fine specimen, but will be forever, unfinished business.
Whether you want to buy a book, support a charity project, or just be inspired by what is possible as you grow older, welcome to the particular world of Peter Wright. Please draw your own conclusions about the subtext, but amongst it is a compelling route towards deeply fulfilling senior years. It`s a potpourri of engagement with many others, family, relatively demanding physical and mental activity, external commitments, and creativity too. Above all, participation.
